Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig (of Shrek fame) published in 1969 had a big impact on me when I was a kid. I was completely fascinated by the color of the pebble.

Of course, I read it to my kids hoping they would love it too.

Full circle moment was when we happened upon a pile of rocks looking suspiciously Sylvester and the Magic Pebble-like, on walks in our local park.

The kids are long past being read too but I always remember Sylvester when I pass by the rockpile.

There are many, many books that stayed with me from childhood and then...there are the standouts.
